Square rugs may not be as commonly considered as rectangular ones, but in certain layouts, they are the perfect solution. Our collection features 4,026 square models, ranging from small 80x80 pieces to expansive 250x250 rugs that can define an entire seating area. One advantage of a square rug is its lack of orientation: when rotated a few times a year, wear is evenly distributed across all four sides.
Where a Square Rug Fits Best
- Facing seating arrangements: If two sofas face each other with a coffee table in the middle, the area is already square; a rectangular rug would disrupt this symmetry.
- Square dining tables: A square rug beneath a square table ensures that chairs have equal space on all four sides.
- Reading nooks: A single armchair, a floor lamp, and a small bookshelf – a square rug unites this trio into a cohesive island.
- Square hallways and landings: A common layout in apartment entrances; a rectangular rug here would leave awkward gaps in the corners.
Chair Allowance: Critical for Dining Tables
If you're using a rug under a dining table, it should extend beyond the table on all four sides. This prevents the back legs of chairs from falling off the rug when pulled out. Practically, this means an allowance of approximately 60-70 centimeters from the edge of the table. The same allowance applies if you're using a round table; the determining factor is the chair's movement, not the table's shape. You can calculate the exact measurement for your own table with our size calculator.
Square vs. Round
Both forms center a space but behave differently: a square rug aligns with walls and furniture lines, creating a calm, ordered feel; a round rug softens corners and offers a more fluid look in transitional areas. As the number of furniture pieces on the rug increases, a square shape is easier to align. If a room has many straight lines, a square rug often provides a more consistent result.
Does a small square rug make a room feel smaller?
It doesn't shrink the room, but rather the 'island' it defines. The main issue isn't the small size itself, but if the rug doesn't touch any furniture. Ensure at least the front legs of one piece of furniture rest on the rug.
What textures are available in square sizes?
Our collection lists piled, low-pile, and flatweave options. If you're looking for a flatweave or thin surface, the square sizes in our kilim rugs collection might be perfect for you.
What if the size doesn't work out?
You have a 14-day unconditional return right; you don't have to decide without seeing the rug in your own space. For care instructions, please refer to our rug care guide.
