Slipping underneath: friction between the rug and the floor

The backing of the rug is crucial here: latex or rubber-coated backings, gelatin-dotted bases, and flat woven bases create very different friction with the floor. A lightweight rug with a slippery backing, no matter how beautiful, will bunch up near the door within a few weeks. Weight also plays a role: a small, light piece will shift much more easily than a large rug with the same backing structure. For narrow pieces like doormats and kitchen runners, it's almost a rule to place a thin mesh pad underneath, regardless of the backing, because the rug's own weight isn't enough to hold it in place. Slipping on top: grip between the foot and the pile

The second type of slipping occurs on the rug's surface. Very smooth, silky-looking, and long-pile surfaces can cause feet to slip when walked on with socks. In areas where wet feet are common, such as stair landings, bathroom exits, and in front of kitchen counters, a short and dense pile surface provides better grip. On steps with elevation changes, the edge of the rug lifting is another risk; models with thick overlock binding stay more secure there.
