A tea stain absorbed with a dry cloth within the first minute is a completely different task than the same stain noticed half an hour later. You should blot and absorb, not rub; rubbing fluffs the fibers and expands the stain's boundary.

For the same reason, the ideal spot for a cotton rug is not in front of the kitchen counter or under the dining table. It thrives best in areas with low liquid traffic, such as bedrooms, in front of seating areas, and study nooks.

An honest warning about sunlight

Dark-colored cotton rugs may fade over time if placed in front of a window that receives direct sunlight all day. This is not a manufacturing defect but a known characteristic of natural fibers. If you're talking about a curtain-less, sun-drenched room, acrylic models, which have higher color stability, would be a safer choice.

Cotton or wool?
