One seeks a voluminous plushness that their hand sinks into, while the other desires a silky smooth surface that their palm glides across. Volume, Touch, and Resilience Are Not the Same

Volume refers to how high the pile rises from the base weave; this is what allows your body to sink in when you sit on it. Touch is the smoothness your fingertip feels as it glides across the surface, and it varies independently of volume. Resilience is how quickly the pile returns to its original height after weight is removed; a highly resilient rug will bounce back after guests leave. Distinction from Two Other Collections in the Same Family

We've grouped long-pile products under three separate headings because they don't feel interchangeable. Plush rugs offer a velvet effect with a short but very dense surface; there, smoothness, not volume, is paramount. Faux fur and shaggy rugs, on the other hand, are accent products with a long, sparse, and irregular-strand, fur-like appearance. Plush sits right in between the two: long enough to sink into, dense enough to maintain its form. If we had combined all three on the same page, dissimilar products would be side-by-side, making selection difficult.

Where They Thrive, Where They Struggle

Plush surfaces are at their best in areas where shoes are removed and movement is relatively low: bedrooms, within a seating area, or a play corner in a child's room. They struggle under a dining table where chairs are constantly pulled, in areas with rolling office chairs, and in front of doors. Also, measure the clearance under your door; a rug with a high pile can catch on an opening door, and the friction will quickly flatten the pile.

The Reality of Living with Long Pile

These surfaces show footprints and vacuum marks. Using a vacuum with the brush roll off and flat suction will prevent the pile from flattening. For heavily trafficked pathways, a shorter pile option, such as runner rugs, requires much less maintenance.
