Rug Size Guide: What are the dimensions for each m²?
Although rug sizes are given in square meters (m²), stores and product pages list them in centimeters. The table below shows the standard dimensions for the most commonly searched rug sizes by area; then we explain how to choose the right size for your room.
Standard rug sizes by area

In short: A 6-square-meter rug is 200x300 cm (or 200x290 cm), a 4-square-meter rug is 160x230 cm, and an 8-square-meter rug is 240x340 cm.
How to calculate square meters
Convert the width and length to meters and multiply: 200 cm x 300 cm = 2 m x 3 m = 6 m². 160 x 230 cm = 1.6 x 2.3 = 3.68 m² (commonly known on the market as "4 square meters").
Choosing the right size for your room
- Living room: At least the front legs of the sofas should rest on the rug. Leaving 20–40 cm between the rug's edge and the wall makes the room feel more spacious.
- Bedroom: The rug should extend under the bottom two-thirds of the bed and stick out 50–60 cm on both sides.
- Dining table: The chairs should remain on the rug even when pulled back; choose a size that extends 60–70 cm beyond each side of the table.
- Hallway: Choose a runner rug 10–15 cm narrower than the hallway on each side (e.g., 80 cm wide for a 100 cm hallway).
