Rug Size Guide — How to Choose the Right Size?

The most common mistake when choosing a rug is picking the wrong size. A rug that is too small makes the room look cluttered, while a rug that is too large makes the space feel smaller. As Hali.net, we have prepared a step-by-step guide to help you choose the correct size.
How to Measure for a Rug?
- Measure the length and width of the room with a tape measure.
- Calculate the rug size, leaving at least 30-40 cm of space from each wall.
- Sketch the layout of your seating arrangement.
- Determine the area the rug should cover.
- Match with standard rug sizes (table below).

Room-Based Size Recommendations
Living Room
At least the front two legs of your seating arrangement should rest on the living room rug. Having the entire seating arrangement on the rug provides the most luxurious look. For a 3+3+1 sofa set, a 200x290 or 240x340 cm rug is ideal.
Bedroom
There are three arrangement options:
- Completely under the bed: The rug extends 60-80 cm beyond the bed on all sides.
- 2/3 under the bed: Under the bed, excluding nightstands.
- Two side runners: Two separate 80x200 cm rugs on either side of the bed.
Dining Room
The rug should be wide enough so that when chairs are pulled out from the table, their legs remain on the rug. General rule: it should extend at least 60 cm from each side of the table.
Hallway
Choose a runner wide enough to leave 10-15 cm of space on both sides of the hallway. For length, it is aesthetically better for it to be 20-30 cm shorter than both ends of the hallway.
Common Sizing Mistakes
- Too small a rug: A rug that acts like an "island" only in the middle of the seating area makes the room look cluttered.
- Rug touching the wall: If the rug is large enough to touch the wall, the space feels cramped, and the rug curls against the wall.
- Wrong proportion: Using a square rug for a very long and narrow room distorts the proportion.
- Color misconception: Light-colored rugs enlarge the space, dark colors make it smaller; consider the color along with the size.
Practical Test
Before deciding, draw the size of the rug you're considering on the floor with paper tape. Live with it for a few days; see for yourself if that size truly fits. This simple method significantly reduces the risk of making the wrong choice.
