Navy blue

Navy blue has been the longest-used dark tone in rugs. In this collection of 2,250 models, geometric modern patterns and classic oriental compositions meet on the same ground; navy blue is one of the rare colors that can carry both.

Navy Blue: Not a Background, But a Boundary

In a light-colored room, a navy blue rug visually defines where the living space begins and ends. In open-plan homes without a wall separating the living room from the dining area, this function is directly useful: a navy blue rug placed under the seating group separates that area with an invisible frame, preventing the two spaces from blending into each other. Continuing the second area in the same home with a more neutral tone, such as a beige model, prevents the two zones from competing.

Why Is the Background of Classic Rugs Navy Blue?

You'll often see navy blue as the background for medallion, central motif, and wide-bordered compositions. The reason isn't just tradition, but readability: a dark background sharpens the edges of the cream, red, and golden yellow motifs on it. The same pattern might look cluttered on a light background, but appears orderly on navy blue. The modern flatweaves in the collection, however, highlight the weave itself, rather than the motif.

Caring for Navy Blue Rugs

On dark-background rugs, the vacuuming direction makes more of a difference than on light-colored ones; sweeping the pile in a single direction ensures an even surface. The method is explained step-by-step in our rug care guide. Using the rug size calculator before deciding on a size also eliminates the risk of dividing the space with a rug that's too small.

Are two navy blue rugs too much in one home?

No, but the patterns of two rugs that are visible to each other should be different. When two sizes of the same pattern are side-by-side, the room looks like a catalog; different patterns in the same color, however, appear to be a conscious choice.

When is navy blue the wrong choice?

If your floor is dark, your furniture is dark, and your walls are mid-toned, a navy blue rug will disappear; it's contrast, not color, that makes a statement. In such a room, a slightly lighter border can bring back the rug's definition. In-stock models ship within 1-3 business days, and you have a 14-day unconditional return policy.
