Rug Shape Guide — Rectangular, Round, Oval, Runner, and More

Last updated: May 2026

The shape of a rug directly affects the perception of the space it occupies. Choosing the wrong shape can ruin even the most beautiful decor, while the right shape can make small spaces feel large and ordinary rooms look aesthetic. At Hali.net, you can find rugs of every shape and size in our catalog of over 113,000 products. In this guide, we explain where each shape works best.

Rectangular Rug

The most classic and frequently preferred rug shape. It's the first choice that comes to mind for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, and most living spaces. Rectangular rugs increase the perceived length of a space.

Where to Use?

• Living room (underneath seating group)
• Bedroom (under/in front of the bed)
• Dining room (underneath the table)
• Study room

For wide options, check out our Living Room Rugs and Bedroom Rugs collections.

Round Rug

Round rugs add a dynamic look to small and medium-sized rooms. Their edgeless structure brings softness and warmth to the space, keeping the eye flowing continuously.

Where to Use?

• Underneath round dining tables
• In bedrooms, especially beside the bed
• In children's rooms, in play areas
• At the entrance in a welcoming spot
• In reading nooks

Oval Rug

Oval rugs, an elongated version of round rugs, add both softness and direction to a space. They are an elegant choice that suits classic decor.

Where to Use?

• In bedrooms, especially in French-style decor
• In classic style living rooms
• In spacious entryways

Square Rug

Square rugs are perfect for spaces where you want to create a symmetrical arrangement. They are one of the favorite shapes in modern minimalist decor.

Where to Use?

• In the center of square seating groups
• In children's playrooms
• In modular living rooms

Runner

With its narrow and long structure, this rug shape is specially designed for hallways, kitchens, and transition areas. It brings aesthetic integrity to long spaces.

Where to Use?

• Main hallway
• In front of kitchen counters
• Beside beds (along the length of the bed)
• At the top of stairs
• Apartment/hotel floor corridors

In Hali.net's Runner Collection, you can find runner rug options in various lengths and patterns.

Octagonal and Special Shapes

Octagonal rugs are preferred under octagonal dining tables or in conceptual designs. Rugs in the shape of animal figures, maps, or flowers are popular in children's rooms.
