However, the same 5 m² is distributed across two different shapes, and the choice is actually made there. Even if the surface area remains the same, the rug's presence in the room changes completely.

Should sofa legs rest on the rug?

This is a placement question as crucial as the size itself, and it has three valid answers:

• All legs off: The rug sits like an independent island under the coffee table. This makes smaller rooms feel more spacious.
• Only front legs on: The sofa set and the rug are perceived as a single unit. This is the most effective use of a 5 m² rug.
• All legs on: This creates the most grounded look, but 5 m² is often not enough for this in most living rooms.

There's a simple way to figure out which applies to you: measure the distance between the front leg of your sofa and the edge of your coffee table. If this distance is less than 60 cm, the front legs will comfortably rest on the rug; if it's more, the rug will remain an island under the coffee table.

200x250 or 180x280?

200x250 cm is exactly 5.00 m², while 180x280 cm is 5.04 m²; the surface area is almost identical, but the look is entirely different. A 200x250 rug is closer to a square and centers the seating arrangement. A 180x280 rug is longer and flows parallel to the wall in a lengthwise living room. Will marks be left if the front legs rest on the rug?
